In two landmark decisions, Ecuador’s Intellectual Property Office made a strong statement in support of visual artists’ rights. The resolutions, delivered in January 2011, sanctioned the Banco Promérica and the Ministry of Culture for the illegal reproduction of visual artworks. Each party incurred fines of $1800. The Copyright Office also reiterated in writing the importance of respecting the copyright law of the country. The strictly administrative penalties make it possible for civil suits to be initiated.
